Event:  Chinese Conversation Hour

with Columbia University Chinese Students

There is probably little dispute that the best way to learn to speak a foreign language is by speaking it and the ability to converse is often a motivating and sustaining force in the other areas of learning. However the limited class time and the lack of a Chinese-speaking environment do not seem to afford us ample opportunities to speak. To this end, our programme is starting a Chinese Conversation Hour with Columbia University¡¯s Chinese graduate students in collaboration with the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Columbia. This activity will take place on Columbia University¡¯s campus on the bi-weekly basis alternating between Friday evening at 7 pm and Saturday afternoon at 4 pm. All interested students taking classes in our program are welcome and encouraged to participate. You will be practicing spoken Chinese one-on-one with a Chinese graduate student. There is an optional Chinese movie at the end of the conversation hour. The dates for the conversation hour for the next few months are as follows:

Friday, 2 December at 7 pm

Saturday, 17 December at 4 pm

Friday, 13 January at 7 pm

Sunday, 29, January, Columbia University Chinese New Year Evening Party: you are invited (no conversation scheduled for that week)

Friday, 10 February at 7 pm

Saturday, 25 February at 4 pm

Friday, 10 March at 7pm

Saturday, 25 March at 4pm

Friday, 7 April at 7pm

Saturday, 22 April at 4pm

This event will be coordinated by Miss Ting Yuan of Columbia University. If you are interested in participating, please register with her at ty2127@columbia.edu (and cc ho@un.org) for each of the above dates.

We suggest that you bring a snack with you to share with your speaking partner.

For inquiries, please call 32481 or email ho@un.org.
